 NAME
      atmcheck, atmserver - test connectivity between local and remote ATM
      nodes

 SYNOPSIS
      /usr/sbin/atmcheck card_inst_num -a ATMaddress [ -n num_of_messages ]
       [ -l length_of_messages ]

      /usr/lbin/atmserver card_inst_num [ -f log_filename ]
       [ -r auth_filename ]

 DESCRIPTION
      atmcheck and atmserver are diagnostic commands used to test the
      connectivity between two ATM interfaces up to the programmatic level.
      The atmcheck user command operates in conjunction with the atmserver
      daemon to perform the test: these two commands should be run on the
      two nodes the user wants to test.

      atmcheck and atmserver must be used while the card is in service.
      Network architecture and switch configuration do not have to be
      changed, so all other applications can keep running normally.

      atmcheck establishes an SVC to the specified node, connects to the
      remote atmserver daemon, and sends the data messages the user
      specified. It then waits for the remote server to echo these messages
      back, and reports if they were successfully transferred, before
      exiting.

      atmserver, once launched in the background, waits for atmcheck clients
      to connect and transfer data. It echoes all data messages received.
      The address of each calling node and the number of messages
      received/echoed are reported in a log file. If specified by the user,
      atmserver performs authorization controls when clients try to connect.
      It therefore uses a file containing all allowed client ATM addresses.

      atmserver is a daemon (running in background), which can be left
      running to assist in troubleshooting when needed. It never exits, so
      you have to use the kill command to stop it.

      Note that atmserver uses a server mechanism, so it can handle several
      atmcheck clients calling from different nodes simultaneously.

      You must be super-user to run atmcheck and atmserver.

    atmcheck ARGUMENTS
      card_inst_num  The card instance number of the ATM adapter. No
		     default.  This is the logical unit number of the ATM
		     adapter. (Run the command ioscan -f to get it.)

      -a ATM_address Specifies the ATM address of the node to which atmcheck
		     establishes a switched virtual circuit connection (40

		     characters without any separator). There is no default
		     for this parameter.

      -n num_of_messages
		     Specifies the number of messages of data that you
		     choose to send. Default: 1 message.

      -l length_of_messages
		     Specifies the number of bytes contained in each
		     message. The value must be less than 8192 bytes.
		     Default: 128 bytes.

    atmserver ARGUMENTS
      card_inst_num  The card instance number of the ATM adapter. No
		     default.  This is the logical unit number of the ATM
		     adapter. (Run the command ioscan -f to get it.)

      -f log_filename
		     Specifies the path and name of the server's log file.
		     Default is /var/adm/atmserver.log

      -r auth_filename
		     Specifies the path and name of the authorization file,
		     which contains the ATM address of allowed clients.
		     There is no default for this parameter: if it is not
		     present, the server does not perform any authorization
		     control.

    atmserver AUTHORIZATION FILE
      This file is optional: no control is performed if you do not use the
      -r option when running atmserver. However, if required, this file
      should contain the addresses of allowed clients: one ATM address per
      line (40 characters), without any separator (no points, no dashes).

    TYPES OF TEST POSSIBLE
      Three types of diagnostic tests allow the user to test the
      connectivity of ATM interfaces. An ATM switch must be used in each
      case since a Switched Virtual Circuit connection is created during the
      test.

      In normal use, atmcheck and atmserver work with two ATM interfaces
      installed in different hosts. This allows the user to know if these
      stacks are able to establish a connection with each other and to
      transfer data at the ATM layer level. An atmserver daemon should be
      running on the remote host, so that the local user only has to run
      atmcheck specifying the remote interface's ATM address to know if
      communication is possible.

      atmcheck and atmserver may also be used to test the functionality of
      two local ATM adapters by specifying the ATM address of a local ATM
      adapter as the destination. This allows you to test the network

      provider and loopback to the local host.

      It is also possible to execute a loopback test using SVCs: run both
      atmcheck and atmserver on the same node. The ATM address will refer to
      the same ATM adapter; messages are sent from atmcheck and echoed back
      by atmserver through the same ATM adapter. Note that even with this
      configuration, all packets are processed by the switch.

 RETURN VALUE
      Upon successful completion, atmcheck returns a value of 0, otherwise
      it returns 1.
